The Fed and You,
June 16, 2001
The Federal Reserve Board is closely watched by investors, borrowers, analysts, and consumers alike. Fed chairman Alan Greenspan is the most powerful economist in the world. Yet the Fed remains a mystery to most people: a central bank housed in a white marble mausoleum in Washington, D.C., conversing in its own language, "fed-speak." For instance, the Fed has cut the fed funds rate, the benchmark interest rate, five times this year in an effort to revive a flagging economy. But what is the fed funds rate? And how can cuts in an interest rate revive an economy? And why did the Fed hike rates six times beginning in 1999 only to reverse course in 2001. Just what is the money supply? Who is the Fed? What do they do? How do they decide on monetary policy? Debra Baer, Chris Farrell, and their guests will explore the workings of the Fed on this edition of Sound Money. Former Fed Governor Lyle Gramley will define the role of the Fed. We'll ask Fed critic Bert Ely if he thinks the Fed has too much power. We'll talk with Justin Martin, author of Greenspan: The Man Behind the Money and ask Wells Capital chief investment officer Jim Paulsen about the effect Fed policy has on the outlook for the economy.

The Economy,

Talk of recession lessened at the end of the first quarter of 2001 when the economy posted better-than-expected gains in gross domestic product. At the same time, higher energy prices raised fears about inflation, and corporate layoffs continued to mount. What lies ahead?
